The online course on Combating Human Trafficking in Humanitarian Contexts provides students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to combat human trafficking in crisis contexts.

Consisting of 15 modules, this course addresses key areas such as the United Nations Trafficking in Persons Protocol (HRT), trafficking mechanisms, and approaches to counter-trafficking adapted to humanitarian contexts. It explores the roles and responsibilities of humanitarian personnel, the integration of anti-trafficking activities into sectoral coordination, as well as specialized content for protection personnel and data collectors. Other areas of intervention include child trafficking, multisectoral approaches, orientation pathways, mental health and psychosocial support for victims, and the role of the media in the fight against trafficking.

Designed for humanitarian professionals, the course combines theoretical knowledge with practical tools, including data collection and research methods, to promote effective responses to trafficking challenges.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand key concepts: Explain the UN Trafficking in Persons Protocol (HRT) and the mechanisms of trafficking in persons, with a focus on humanitarian contexts.
  • Apply anti-trafficking approaches: Identify and implement standard and context-specific anti-trafficking (CT) strategies tailored to humanitarian crises.
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities: Define the roles and responsibilities of humanitarian personnel in preventing and responding to trafficking in persons.
  • Integrating LT into coordination: Demonstrate how to integrate LT activities into humanitarian coordination mechanisms, including sectoral responses.
  • Specialize in Child Protection and Human Trafficking: Develop expertise for protection personnel and combat child trafficking in humanitarian contexts.
  • Using data effectively: Equip learners with the skills to collect, analyze, and use data and research on human trafficking in an ethical and effective manner.
  • Adopt multi-sectoral strategies: Build capacity to design and implement multi-sectoral approaches to combat trafficking in persons.
  • Supporting victims: Understand and implement orientation pathways and provide psychosocial and mental health support to victims of human trafficking.

Target audience

This online course on combating human trafficking in humanitarian contexts is designed to:

  • Communications Staff: Individuals who use the media to raise awareness and support initiatives to combat human trafficking in crisis situations.
  • Humanitarian personnel: UNICEF staff involved in humanitarian interventions to combat human trafficking in crises.
  • Child protection officers: Professionals dedicated to preventing and combating human trafficking in emergency situations.
  • Data collectors and researchers: Individuals responsible for collecting, analysing and using data on trafficking in human beings in humanitarian operations.
  • Program Leads: Officials who integrate anti-trafficking strategies into humanitarian coordination, including sectoral systems.
  • Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Service (MHPS) Providers: Professionals who care for victims of human trafficking in crisis situations.

Duration

Each module lasts 15 minutes. The self-paced training will take between 3 and 4 hours.

The minimum requirement to obtain the course certificate is the successful completion of 8 of the 15 modules that make up the course.

Structure

The online course on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in Humanitarian Situations consists of eight modules:

  3. Milking people in humanitarian contexts
  4. Reply Challenge – Standardized Approach to Combating Human Trafficking
  5. Reply Challenge – Approach to Combating Human Trafficking in Persons Humanitarian crisis contexts
  6. Roles and Responsibilities of humanitarian personnel in the fight against trafficking
  7. Integration of Anti-trafficking activities in the humanitarian coordination response (cluster)
  8. Specific content for protection personnel in humanitarian situations
  9. Trafficking in persons, Data and research
  10. Specific content on child trafficking in humanitarian contexts
  11. Specific content for humanitarian staff who will use data collection tools
