At the end of this course, you should be able to explain gender concepts, the international framework and gender within the UN program cycle. You will also be able to discuss how gender equality and women’s empowerment help integrate a gender perspective into UNICEF programming.

Module 1: Gender Concepts to Get Started
Learning Objectives:
- Define key terms associated with gender and women’s empowerment
- Identify key components of the social construction of gender
- Recognize ways I which social systems have perpetuated inequalities between men and women
- Identify mechanisms used for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment
Module 2: International Frameworks for Gender Equality
Learning Objectives:
- Refresh your knowledge of human rights concepts and how women’s rights affect men and women differently
- Identify the principal international standards on women’s rights and gender equality
- Recognize that achieving gender equality is a central part of key global commitments
Module 3: Promoting Gender Equality throughout the UN System
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a basic understanding of gender mainstreaming
- Explain how the UN is working on gender mainstreaming
- Make the link between gender mainstreaming and equal representation of women and ,en
- Understand the role of UN Women and the key tools for system-wide accountability o gender equality and women’s empowerment
Module 6: Violence against women and girls
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize violence against women and girls as gender-based violence.
- Identify the human rights framework that defines violence against women as a violation
- Name different forms of violence against women and girls and in specific contexts.
- Understand the consequences and costs of violence against women and girls.
- Identify the causes and some of the risk factors for perpetration and victimization.
- Discover some of the key strategies to address violence against women and girls.
Audience
This course is open to all UNICEF staff who would like to know more about gender in international development.
Length
It should take you about 90 minutes to complete this self-paced course.
Methodology
This course is composed of three self-paced eLearning modules with a short quiz after each module.
