Learning objectives

The programme covers a range of topics specific to managing in emergencies and high-threat environments. At the end of the programme, UNICEF leaders will better understand and be able to carry out their responsibilities in humanitarian environments across the following areas:

  • Module 2. Managing human resources
  • Module 3. Managing programme delivery
  • Module 4. Operational context
  • Module 5. Making decisions under pressure
  • Module 6. Negotiating in emergency and high-threat environments
  • Module 7. Keeping yourself resilient
  • Module 8. Keeping your team resilient
  • Module 9. Leading in emergencies and high-threat environments
  • Module 10. Building an effective team

The specific learning objectives for each of these topics are provided at the start of each module.

Audience

This learning programme is for UNICEF supervisors and managers at every level who are operating in, or who are preparing to operate in, an emergency or high-threat environment.

Length

The learning programme will take up to 10 hours to complete online. There are ten modules which will each take approximately 30 minutes – 1 hour to complete online, with some modules containing additional materials for team-building activities you can run offline with your team members, varying in duration from 1 – 4 hours.

Methodology

Each module provides an overview of specific issues common in emergencies and high-threat environments, advice on how to approach them, and guidance for managers on their role and responsibilities as a UNICEF leader. Each module also contains links to related guidance from UNICEF, UN system-wide, and the wider international development and humanitarian sector. Learning materials include short guidance booklets, practical checklists, and a range of other learning activities, such as online quizzes and team-building activities you can run offline with your team members.
