About the course

This course is designed to provide UNICEF staff with foundational knowledge and skills relating to education in emergencies.  The course was originally designed by ESARO, the content has been utilized and updated from existing content from EiE capacity development training (such as for Frontline Responders, INEE Minimum Standards, Risk-Informed Programming, and others) in a comprehensive manner.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, learners will

  • Have a general understanding of humanitarian architecture and UNICEF Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action in relation to Education. 
  • Build basic knowledge and skills on key elements of EiE responses such as strategic response planning, education sector coordination mechanisms in emergencies; EiE thematic programming; and technical and operational areas such as assessments, information management/M&E, supply/logistics in emergencies.  
  • Understand resilient education systems and when to apply key cross-sectoral considerations into EiE programmes.

Audience

This course is designed primarily for UNICEF Education staff (country offices, regional offices, and HQ) and all education practitioners.   It is also open for other staff and implementing partners who are or will be working in fragile contexts, such as other UN agencies, standby partners, or government representatives, including stakeholders with little to no experience working on education in emergencies  and want to learn more.

Length

It should take you about 12 hours over 6 weeks to complete this self-paced course. 

Methodology

The course is composed of four modules which contain video lessons from key EiE experts, text-based and interactive content, assessments, forum discussions, and additional readings. It is self-paced with a facilitator monitoring the forum discussions.

  • Module 2: Technical areas for frontline responders 
  • Module 3: Rights-based approaches to education and building resilient education systems 
  • Module 4: Cross-cutting issues
