Tableau is a visual analytics platform which allows you to connect to multiple sources of data, providing exploration through an intuitive interface, enabling data-driven decision-making.


The tutorials in this session are for those using Tableau Prep and Tableau Desktop, which are coupled in the Creator Licence. Licenses currently cost ~$70 per use per month and your local office may already have a licence.


In addition to the licensed version of Tableau, there is a free version (Tableau Public) which also allows you to visualise and publish data. You can access videos linked through Lesson 8 for Tableau Public.


Another alternative to Tableau is Power BI. Use of either depends on both resources and preferences. There is a module on Power BI in the training material.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain what Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep are used for;
  • List the steps in data preparation and cleaning;
  • Describe the types of visualisations you can create in Tableau;
  • Explain how to customise a dashboard; and
  • Describe how to use Mapbox to customise geographic analysis.

Audience

This module is an introductory-level course aimed at anyone who is interested in developing skills and knowledge in nutrition information management in humanitarian contexts, and who needs to engage with coordination and humanitarian architecture on this topic. It is part of the recommended learning path for sub-national IMOs aiming to progress to national-level roles.
