Overview

Child marriage (CM) and female genital mutilation (FGM) are violations of human rights, with devastating consequences for individuals and for society. These harmful practices are now firmly on the global development agenda, most prominently through their inclusion in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 5.3, which calls for the elimination of both practices by 2030. Data play a critical role in ending child marriage and female genital mutilation. Generating, analysing and using robust data to inform policies and programmes, and enhance accountability.

UNICEF is the custodian agency for monitoring progress towards SDG 5.3. This involves undertaking several initiatives around the analysis, dissemination and use of data on these topics including this training. The objective of the virtual training workshop is to improve capacity on the analysis, interpretation and use of data related to child marriage (CM) and female genital mutilation (FGM). The focus of the training is to familiarize participants with the available data on these topics and to illustrate how data can be used for programming, monitoring and advocacy.
