This course has been designed to prepare personnel at National Statistical Offices (NSO) and Statistics/M&E Offices within line ministries to estimate Child Poverty, so that child poverty reports are developed in-country, which can strategically inform further policymaking, and be reported to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) database.

This will be achieved by:

  • Identifying what Child Poverty is (or is not).
  • Developing a Child Poverty Profile along with the calculation and analysis of specific indicators and Child Poverty characteristics.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Define Child Poverty by identifying its main characteristics, constitutive elements, and other measurement issues.
  • Identify and prepare data sources for Child Poverty measurement.
  • Develop an accurate Child Poverty profile based on UNICEF’s 2-step process measurement and calculate other relevant Child Poverty characteristics.
  • Analyze Child Poverty Profiles to review the robustness of measurements by disaggregating results, cross-tabulating with other child issues, and performing a sensitivity analysis.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to feel:

  • Confident in calculating Child Poverty to obtain an accurate Child Poverty Profile.
  • Motivated to further analyze and disaggregate Child Poverty estimates depending on country needs and contexts.
  • Confident to report Child Poverty estimates to the SDG database.
