Learning objectives

This course will help you to: 

    • Better understand the crucial role of education in refugee protection and well-being

    • Align refugee education programmes with national education systems and long-term development agendas 

    • Integrate inclusive and equitable educational approaches in your work 

    • Promote inclusive and sustainable solutions in education for refugees 

    • Actively engage in planning, budgeting, and monitoring of refugee education initiatives 


Audience

This course is open to all users interested in promoting and supporting education for refugees, including humanitarian workers with Education, Protection, Field or Programme functions.  


Length

This course will take approximately 4.5 hours to complete. 


Methodology

This course comprises of two self-paced online modules and one interactive reading module.  

Module 1 sets the stage as you take on your new role at a UNHCR office in Freedonia. You will be provided with an overview of your mission, meet your team, and participate in a fact-finding mission. This module is divided into five parts, each of which builds upon the other.  

Module 2 focuses on UNHCR’s approach to refugee education. You will strive to ensure refugee inclusion in the national education systems, and work on education sector planning as well as programming cash-based interventions, in Freedonia. 

Modules 1 & 2 contain audio and video recordings which are accompanied by transcripts and closed captions. At the end of each online module, you will be provided with a summary and points for reflection.  

Module 3 - Technical Guide to Education for Refugees, is an interactive PDF document. It delves into a range of topics including accelerated education programmes, connected education, gender equality, inclusion in national systems, infrastructure, intersectoral programming, language, out-of-school refugee education, secondary and tertiary education, teacher management and development, as well as statelessness and education.  

Module 3 can also be used as a stand-alone technical guide for educational practitioners who wish to strengthen their knowledge and skills in certain areas. It is structured in such a way where readers can pick and choose the topic that they wish to read from the Glossary, and they will be able to access the chapter directly. There is also a Glossary at the end of the Technical Guide with an elaboration of key definitions.
