Gender-transformative education recognizes that education can be a force for achieving positive social change and for gender justice: it has the potential to promote positive social and political change by addressing issues of gender inequality and challenging existing gender norms.

The e-learning course on Gender Transformative Education was developed through a partnership between Plan International, UNGEI, UNICEF and Transform Education, in response to requests from staff and partners who wanted to improve their own knowledge about gender transformative programmes. This course is also available in French and French in Spanish.

The development of this e-learning course has been made possible thanks to the financial support of the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Use basic knowledge on gender-transformative approaches to design, implement, evaluate education programs and advocacy initiatives.
  • Indicate how the conceptual framework of gender-transformative education should be used in programmes and advocacy initiatives for those working in education, policymakers, youth groups and other key actors.
  • Use appropriate tools in their work (design of a new project/program, strategy, advocacy initiative, etc.)

  • Technical experts in government education
  • Youth activists
  • Civil society organizations and multilateral organizations
  • The general public working in other fields and wanting to improve their understanding of the industry by diving into this mid-level content.

Length

You will be able to complete this online course independently in 3 - 4 hours.

Methodology

This course consists of an introductory module, five short self-paced modules, and an assessment at the end of the course. Each module introduces key terminology and concepts illustrated by interactive icons and short videos of young activists that bring a greater diversity of voices. Videos are available with or without sound, and a transcript is provided for all videos. At the end of each module, a short quiz allows you to check your understanding and reflect on the content.

Structure

Module 0. Self-assessment: Knowing the basics – This module explores the key terminology and concepts that form the basis of understanding about gender-transformative education (GEE) and the roles that gender inequality, harmful gender norms and stereotypes play in education.

Module 1. Let's Talk About Gender Transformative Education – This module provides a basic understanding of the concept of gender transformative education. By unpacking the concept of ETG, participants will be able to describe gender-transformative education and its importance; Identify the six key elements that underpin gender-transformative education work; summarize the evidence supporting gender-transformative education and debunk common misconceptions; and indicate how the conceptual framework of gender-transformative education can advance your own work.

Module 2. Know your context – This module presents the basic needs and possibilities of ETG. Participants will gain a better understanding of the following three areas – situation analysis, diversity and intersectionality analysis, and cultural context and social dynamics – this will inform context analysis and the design of education programs and advocacy interventions.

Module 3.1. Gender-Transformative Education Programs – This module introduces the fundamentals of the GTE programs. Participants will learn how to integrate gender-transformative education through a whole-school approach to education programmes; how to identify different levels of intervention and gender-transformative activities; and how to implement the foundational frameworks and tools in the programmes.

Module 3.2. Measuring Effectiveness – Gives a basic understanding of the purpose and importance of monitoring and evaluation in advancing GTE and how to critically assess the effectiveness and impact of gender transformative programs and influencing initiatives.

Module 3.2. Measuring Impact – This module provides an understanding of the purpose and importance of monitoring and evaluation in advancing gender equality in education. Participants will be able to identify the nature of the information needed to monitor whether planned activities to address gender disparities are being implemented effectively, and to critically assess the effectiveness and impact of ETG programmes and advocacy initiatives.

Module 4. Gender Transformative Influence and Education – This module introduces foundational knowledge on effective advocacy and political influence for ETG. Participants will learn how to determine the target audience, develop context- and audience-specific advocacy messages for ETG, identify elements of an effective ETG advocacy strategy, and how to implement intergenerational strategies to achieve ETG.
