Background and Training Objective
The Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) is designed to provide immediate, life-saving medical care in the field, especially in environments where healthcare infrastructure is compromised or unavailable. A training on how to use this bag is very important to UNICEF's emergency preparedness and response strategy, as it equips colleagues with the necessary skills and knowledge to save lives in challenging environments.
The ETB is an essential life-saving tool, which has been standardized for use by all UN professional security officers and other selected UN personnel. The ETB contains the appropriate equipment needed to provide first aid treatment to three moderately injured or one seriously injured victim.
Hence, the training aims to:
- Train participants as emergency medical first responders.
- Familiarize participants with the contents and use of the materials in the ETB.
- Equip participants with the baseline skills necessary to respond to mass casualty incidents.

Structure and Content
The primary purpose of the Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) and its associated training is to ensure that proper first responder care, life-saving tools and supplies are readily available to provide adequate emergency medical treatment to UN personnel.
UN First Responders are obligated to be able to provide medical treatment or assistance safely, professionally and independently to all UN personnel regardless of gender, age, race, religion, cultural identification, national origin or sexual orientation.
The ETB training has been structured in a way that ensures its contents equip participants with the skills to fulfil this obligation.
