Background and Training Objective

The Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE) training was developed by the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) and the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) to address the specific safety and security needs of UN personnel deployed in complex, volatile, and dangerous environments.

 The training aims to equip staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their security awareness, prevent and respond to security incidents, and ensure a shared understanding of security principles and guidelines.

Participants who attend the SSAFE Training are expected to gain:

1. Comprehensive Safety and Security Skills:

    • Acquire essential safety and security skills tailored for work in complex and volatile environments. 

2. Shared Understanding of Security Principles:

    • Develop a shared understanding of key principles, guidelines, and policies that govern security in field environments.

3. Enhanced Security Awareness:

    • Increase their awareness of security risks and how to mitigate them effectively.

4. Knowledge of Security Incident Prevention:

    • Gain the knowledge required to prevent various security incidents that may occur in volatile areas.

5. Incident Response Skills:

    • Learn and practice the skills necessary to respond appropriately and efficiently to different types of security incidents.

6. Preparedness for Deployment:

    • Be fully prepared for deployment to dangerous and unpredictable areas with the necessary safety and security training.

Audience icon    

  • All UNICEF Supply Division staff likely to be deployed in emergencies, crisis situations, and volatile environments. 
  • UNICEF Supply Division staff recommended for the Supply Emergency and Surge Roster designated for first and second wave support. Priority will be given to those on first wave support likely to be deployed particularly those who are likely to need to operate outside of office compounds or conduct field missions.

This is a 4 full-day training with 3 events scheduled as follows:

  • Dates: Monday, 26 August 2024 – Thursday, 29 August 2024 (Event 1)

                    Monday, 23 September 2024 – Thursday, 26 September 2024 (Event 2)

                    Monday, 30 September 2024 – Thursday, 03 October 2024 (Event 3) 

  • Time:  8:30 AM – 5:30 PM daily (7:00 AM – 6:00 PM on the last day)

Methodology and Format 

  • Format:            In-person live session 
  • Venue:              Blue Conference Room at C2 (Theory); Danish Military Base in Birkerød (Practical)
  • Methodology: Instructor-led sessions consisting of:  
  • Mandatory pre-course learning.
  • Theoretical lessons, demonstrations, and group work.
  • Simulations and Practical exercises at a Danish Military Base in Birkerød: This is a field-day exercise conducted with professional role players from the Italian Army, simulating real-life situations that staff may encounter. This enhances participants' learning experiences by preparing them to face risks and dangers in volatile and unstable areas.

The standard SSAFE learning curriculum consists of the following modules: 

  • UN Security Management System 
  • Working in Field Environments 
  • Communication and Technology 
  • Vehicle and Movement 
  • Captivity and Detention 
  • Managing Injuries in Field Environments 

Attendance Requirementsicon

  1. Participation for selected candidates is mandatory. Selected participants must be physically and mentally present throughout the training duration from the first day to the last day.
