In this course, you will explore the importance of Ethical Evidence Generation at UNICEF, the principles and requirements of the UNICEF Procedure for Ethical Standards in Research, Evaluations and Data Collection and Analysis and how this applies to the work that is undertaken across the organization.

This course is different from the Ethics and Integrity Course which applies to all staff. 
The course is designed to meet the requirement under the UNICEF Procedure for Ethical Standards that; Researchers, evaluators or enumerators involved in primary data collection involving human subjects must have undertaken basic ethics training. (Core Procedure VII)

Completion of this course will meet the above requirement and receipt of a certificate will evidence appropriate training for future research programmes undertaken by the staff member.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand what does ethics in evidence generation at UNICEF mean at UNICEF and what are the key principles
  • Understand why ethics in evidence generation is important for UNICEF
  • Reflect on ethical considerations throughout the research cycle
  • Embed relevant mechanisms to ensure the protection of participants and staff throughout the evidence generation program
  • Understand the basic requirements for UNICEF staff in ensuring ethical considerations are embedded in their practice.
  • Reflect on whether consultants have appropriately considered ethical issues in evidence generation practice and have/will take appropriate actions to mitigate against risks and address ethical issues.

Audience

This course is targeted at UNICEF staff undertaking or contracting to undertake an evidence generation programme. It is also open to anyone interested in learning about Ethical Evidence Generation at UNICEF and more specifically ethical evidence generation involving children. 

Length

It should take you about 90 minutes to complete this self-paced course. 

Methodology

This course is composed of a single short self-paced animated module, including various examples and activities. 

Structure

This course is composed of 7 modules:

  1. Introduction: What is ethical evidence generation?
  2. Why is ethical evidence generation important?
  3. UNICEF core requirement for ethical evidence generation
  4. Principles of ethical evidence generation
  5. Key considerations in ethical evidence generation
  6. Documenting ethics in evidence generation
  7. Final summary and assessment.
