Whatever your role in humanitarian action – community member, volunteer, search & rescue, military, government officer, aid worker, trainer, or manager of an NGO – you can promote Sphere and encourage your employer, colleagues and partners to adopt Sphere methodologies and to use the Minimum Standards.
This one-hour e-learning module introduces Sphere, the Sphere Approach, the Sphere Handbook, and the benefits that Sphere can bring to your network and, ultimately, to the people affected by crisis and disaster that you serve.
The first iteration of this one-hour e-learning module was created in 2016 by Sphere, the Humanitarian Leadership Academy and InfoPro Learning. It was originally called Sphere for Managers: How to Champion the Sphere approach in your Organisation.
In 2018, the course was refreshed, repurposed and renamed as How to be a Sphere Champion. Although the target audience is now much broader, much of the content and many of the key messages remain the same.
While you may need management responsibility to fully embed Sphere into an organisation, anyone can be a Sphere Champion through their own actions and by encouraging those with power to act.
Sphere is grateful to Sphere Champions, Dwi, Illiassou, Gopal, Amna and Magdalena for agreeing to appear in this course and associated materials.
Learning objectives
By the end of the module, you will be able to explain:
- The Sphere Approach to humanitarian response.
- The usefulness of the Sphere Handbook to prepare, manage and coordinate humanitarian relief efforts.
- The benefits of using the Sphere Handbook to fulfil a commitment to quality and accountability.
- The first steps to advocating for Sphere within your network.
Audience
Anyone involved in humanitarian action who wishes to strengthen the effectiveness of their response, and the responses of their partners.
Length
This e-learning module will take about one hour.
Completion and certification
On completion of the course, you will be able to save and/or print a certificate of completion. This may be used as evidence that you have completed the course. It does not imply that you are a certified Sphere Champion or that you are in any way affiliated with or endorsed by Sphere.
Does this Module link with the Sphere Handbook in Action e-learning course?
The Sphere Champions e-learning module complements the Sphere Handbook in action e-learning course. While the Sphere for Managers e-learning module gives you a quick overview of Sphere, the Sphere Handbook in action will enable you to go deeper into the subject, through a fifteen-hour study based on five fictional scenarios.
The course brings the Handbook to life through the use of realistic scenarios, helping the learner to get acquainted with its core messages and to understand how to use it holistically.
Structure
The course is made up of 1 self-paced module.
