Needs assessment provides the evidence base for strategic planning, as well as the baseline information upon which situation and response monitoring systems will rely. It should therefore form a continuous process throughout the humanitarian programme cycle. It’s important that all the Nutrition Cluster members understand and support the process by contributing to the collection, analysis and routine monitoring of nutrition data.

A nutrition needs assessment is the systematic process of collecting and interpreting information in order to make decisions about the nature and cause of a nutrition situation. Nutrition needs assessments provide evidence to inform decisions, select priorities, and develop strategies and advocacy messages.
