Welcome to this course on Borehole Drilling – Planning, Contracting & Management.
The course is based on the UNICEF tool kit for Borehole Drilling – Planning, Contracting & Management and will help you follow the logical sequence of a project’s life for the planning, contracting, and management of a borehole drilling project, using case studies and lessons learned from colleagues from the WASH programme to better understand the processes, challenges, and risks associated with borehole drilling.
Structure
The course is organized as follows:
- Module 1: Principles for Planning, Contracting and the Management of Borehole Drilling Projects.
- Module 2: Procurement Considerations for Borehole Drilling Works.
- Module 3: Borehole Siting and Drilling Supervision Consultancy
- Module 4: Terms of Reference for Borehole Drilling Works and Pump Supply and Installation.

Learning objectives
- Define the life of a borehole drilling project.
- Describe UNICEF's procurement practices and recommendations on processes (Invitation to Bid [ITB] versus Request for Proposal for Services [RFPS]), evaluation criteria, contract provisions, generic bill of quantities, terms of reference and contractual approaches
- Be able to draw upon technical services for siting of boreholes, borehole construction and supervision of construction works.
- Identify risks, forecast challenges and follow a strategy to address them.
