Harnessing the Power of Data
to End Harmful Practices
Child marriage and female genital mutilation are violations of human rights, with devastating consequences for individuals and for society. These harmful practices are firmly placed in the Sustainable Development Goals: SDG target 5.3 calls for the elimination of both practices by 2030.
Effective data generation, analysis and utilization are essential in addressing these complex, persistent and deeply rooted practices. This course aims to foster understanding and guide effective action to eliminate child marriage and female genital mutilation.
Learning objectives
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Determine data needs and how to address them
- Identify key indicators used to monitor child marriage and female genital mutilation
- Interpret data by understanding how statistical analyses are conducted
- Understand how to use data to raise awareness and to influence decision-making
Audience
The course is designed for practitioners to enhance skills in the analysis, interpretation and use of data related to harmful practices. It is intended for practitioners who work on child marriage and female genital mutilation programmes. Participants include those who work in relevant government line ministries, civil society organizations, partner UN organizations and UNICEF.
Length
This course is composed of 9 modules with an average dedication time of 3 hours per module.
Methodology
The course uses multiple instructional methodologies such as videos, interactive activities and games. This self-paced distance learning programme can be taken anywhere, anytime through computer and mobile devices. At the end of each module, you will be required to pass a short assessment test and provide feedback.
Structure
This course is composed of the following eight modules:
- Evaluating data needs
- Understanding data sources
- Assessing data quality and filling data gaps
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Visualizing data
- Measuring child marriage
- Measuring female genital mutilation
- Using and disseminating data
Certificate
Participants will be awarded a course certificate upon completion of the assessment tests, the module and course feedback.
