Welcome to UNICEF Community Engagement in Humanitarian Action Toolkit (CHAT) Course!

This five-module course has been designed to introduce you to the revised CHAT and serves as a comprehensive programmatic guide and practical tool compendium for different type of emergencies.  

Upon completion, UNICEF personnel and partners will  be able to implement Community Engagement for Social and Behaviour Change in the Humanitarian Programme Cycle. 


Learning objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Summarize the purpose and scope of CHAT, including key features, values and priorities for action.
  • Articulate how CHAT’s strategies for Community Engagement for Social and Behaviour Change are aligned to the Humanitarian Programme Cycle.
  • Locate and identify relevant guidance within CHAT when responding to a specific humanitarian context.
  • Explain how the guidance in CHAT ensures the proper use of evidence and the institutionalization of community engagement.
  • Determine key actions and recommended best practices for Community Engagement for Social and Behaviour Change within specific humanitarian contexts.


Audience

    • Humanitarian practitioners and experts within national governments, sub-national government entities, civil society. organizations and donors who are leading and working on CE,SBC interventions. 
    • Leaders of humanitarian organizations, heads of humanitarian and development programming and inter-agency networks working at the individual and organizational level.
    • Social and Behaviour Change staff.
    • Other UNICEF staff interested and involved in Community Engagement-related interventions in emergency contexts.

          Length

          It should take you about 100 minutes to complete this course.

          Methodology

          This course is composed of five self-paced modules. The course begins with an introductory module, continues with three modules elaborating on key themes within CHAT, and ends with a practice module encouraging you to apply your newly acquired strategies in different scenarios. Each module offers a mix of interactive elements and knowledge checks to build on your learning as you become more confident and comfortable with navigating CHAT for your specific needs. 

          Structure

          This course is composed of five modules:

          1. Introduction and overview.
          2. Community Engagement for Social and Behaviour Change in the Humanitarian Programme Cycle.
          3. CHAT for specific humanitarian contexts.
          4. Use of evidence and the institutionalization of Community Engagement for Social and Behaviour Change.
          5. Using CHAT in humanitarian contexts.
