Background and Training Objective

 UNICEF Senior Management, subject matter experts in areas of particular media interest, and communications personnel are asked to take part in interviews, provide statements, and/or offer responses to critical media queries pertaining to supply-related issues affecting children, often within tight timeframes. These interventions, whether on camera, radio, or in print, require specific competencies.

Therefore, this training aims to build the capacity of UNICEF Supply Division (SD) personnel to:

  • Become effective advocates for children through media engagement.
  • Leverage UNICEF's media reach by shaping public sentiment, mobilizing positive public participation, raising awareness on priority issues, and strengthening UNICEF’s position as an authoritative source of information on issues affecting children.

At the end of this training, participants are expected to:

  • Gain a good understanding of media, journalists’ needs and tactics, and how to support the overall communication efforts when responding to the media regarding UNICEF’s position on issues affecting children. 
  • Be able to engage effectively with media when giving interviews, statements and/or responses including in times of emergency and crisis.
  • Apprehend the interview do’s and don’ts as well as best practices for different channels (TV, audio, print), and
  • Develop good presentation skills.

Each training consists of two sessions: a 2-hour introductory session for all participants, followed by a 60 to 90-minute practical session in smaller groups of 1-3 participants per group. 

Methodology 

The training will take place in person. An online back-up training will be provided for those who could not attend in-person.

Structure 

For each participant, the training consists of two sessions:

  • A 2-hour group introductory session planned for 28 May, covering topics ranging from understanding journalists’ needs to mastering key elements of print, television, radio and online interviews.
  • A 1.5-hour individual practical session planned for 29 or 30 May, where you will put the theory into practice and give mock interviews together with a coach and another participating colleague.

Attendance Requirementsicon

In-person participation is mandatory. In total, the training will take 3.5 hours where you will learn what will serve you well throughout your career.
