Background and Training Objective

Excel Thematic Learning Sessions are designed to enhance practical Excel skills by focusing on specific tools for tasks such as data cleaning, model security, and data analysis. Building on basic and intermediate Excel skills, the course provides in-depth exploration of advanced functionalities through hands-on case exercises, emphasizing practical application.

The training aims to enhance the capacity of UNICEF Supply Division (SD) personnel to:

  • Handle multiple workbooks and create cross-referencing formulas.
  • Construct advanced formulas using essential built-in functions.
  • Employ VLOOKUP and MATCH functions to search and retrieve data from large datasets.
  • Identify and troubleshoot formula errors.
  • Apply conditional formatting to highlight critical figures.
  • Generate summaries and perform calculations on extensive lists using functions such as Subtotals and SUMIFS.
  • Create and manage PivotTables for comprehensive data analysis.

By the end of the training, participants are expected to:

  • Master the FUNCTION wizard, including TEXT, DATE, LOOKUP, and MATH functions.
  • Utilize Formula Auditing to debug complex functions and formulas.
  • Gain proficiency in creating and manipulating PivotTables for data analysis and reporting.
  • Learn to develop dynamic charts for trend, comparison, and forecast visualization.
  • Acquire skills in recording and utilizing macros to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Enhance their ability to clean and transform data using Power Query.
  • Understand data validation techniques to manage inputs and secure cells and worksheets.
  • Use conditional formatting to quickly identify and highlight key data points.
  • Construct robust and error-free Excel models by applying best practices in formula creation and data management.

This training is for all UNICEF SD personnel with considerable Excel skills who wish to advance to a substantial level where they can apply those skills in real-case scenarios.

This is a 3 half-day training scheduled as follows:

  • Dates: Tuesday, 17 September 2024 – Thursday, 19 September 2024
  • Time:  9:00 AM – 1:00 PM daily (with minor breaks in between)

Methodology and Format 

  • Format: Virtual live sessions via Teams.
  • Methodology:

      • Instructor-led sessions with a mandatory pre-course exam.
      • Practical lessons based on case exercises, enhancing participants' learning by enabling practical application of existing Excel skills.

    • Queries (tables)

2. Controlling Inputs and Securing Cells/Sheets

    • Data validation
    • Protection

3. Functions for Categorizing and Managing Data

    • Logical functions
    • Lookup functions
    • Information functions

4. Conditional Formatting

    • Formatting rules
    • Colours and Icons

5. Charts for Data Presentation

    • Chart types
    • Trend lines
    • Whiskers

6. Pivot Tables for Data Analysis

    • Structuring and analyzing a dataset (table)
    • Pivot Charts
    • Slicers

Attendance Requirementsicon

  1. Attendance for all three sessions is not mandatory. But Participation in a registered session is Mandatory. 
  2. Participants can choose to attend all sessions or select specific ones that address their learning needs.
  3. In total, the training will take 12 hours spanning 3 days (4 hours daily) where you will learn the practical application of Excel tools in the FORMULA tab and the FUNCTION library.
