At the global level, clusters have been established in 11 key areas to support the cluster approach. The global cluster leads report to the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator. UNICEF is the global cluster lead agency (CLA) for nutrition, WASH, education and the child protection area of responsibility (AOR). UNICEF has a specific role and responsibilities with regards to the implementation of the cluster approach both at global level and at country level.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role that UNICEF plays as the CLA at a global level
  • Distinguish the responsibilities for UNICEF country office representatives and UNICEF country offices within the cluster approach
  • Discuss the concept of “provider of last resort” and explain the role of the responsible agency

This module is an introductory-level course aimed at anyone who is interested in developing skills and knowledge in nutrition cluster coordination in humanitarian contexts, and who needs to engage with humanitarian architecture on this topic. It is part of the recommended learning path for sub-national nutrition cluster coordinators aiming to progress to national-level roles.
